My first brand new car ever

My 10 year old car finally died on me and we were forced to get a replacement.

Tuesday

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The US release of The Girl with the Dragon tattoo featured one of the most unattractive actresses I've ever seen. Looks aren't everything but they went out of their way to make the actress truly ugly.

From Wikipedia: The Hunger Games (film)

On August 8, 2011, while still shooting the film, Lionsgate announced that a film adaptation of the second novel in The Hunger Games trilogy, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, is scheduled to be released on November 22, 2013.[185] In November 2011, Lionsgate entered negotiations with screenwriter Simon Beaufoy to adapt the novel for screen, since the post-production schedule for The Hunger Games was too crowded for Ross and Collins to adapt the next film as originally planned.[186] The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will begin production in the summer of 2012.[187] Gary Ross will not return for Catching Fire, and instead Francis Lawrence will direct.[188][189][190][191] On May 6, 2012, it was reported thatMichael Arndt was in talks to re-write the script for Catching Fire.[192]

In July 2012, release dates were confirmed for two films based on the last book MockingjayThe Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 will be released November 21, 2014 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 will be released November 20, 2015.[193] Lawrence, Hutcherson, Hemsworth, and Harrelson have all signed on to the whole franchise.[3][194] The Hunger Games: Catching Fire began filming September, 10 2012.[195]

Sunday

Shopping diet

It can be marvelously beneficial not to shop. To not be a consumer.

We try only to shop when and if we have to and refrain from spending anything most days.

Saturday

TV diet

People watch far too much TV.
In lieu of life.

Hubby and myself don't have an aerial, a dish or a cable, nor do we watch TV on-line. We selectively watch DVDs and limit ourselves to 45 mins weekdays and 2 episodes or a movie weekends.

How clearer the mind becomes...

Saturday

What if?

Sci-fi challenges the reader/viewer with the question: What if?

Intelligent sci-fi introduces a whole new concept or consideration. Philip K Dick wrote an excellent essay on this in the back of his book Beyond Lies the Wub.

Friday

Shades of old hat

My colleague mentioned the Shades of Grey book to me the other day. Apparently it's the book of choice for women of a certain age.

I must confess I was a little curious.

Then I read some more. It's a soft-porn book featuring male-dominated S & M.

What era are we living in?
The Story of O was written in the 1950's and I really didn't think that men dominating women was in vogue these days.
After all, women have been downtrodden by men for millenia....

Are people that out of touch?

I can't imagine any feminist being captivated by the content. Surely, a woman seeking submission in the 21st Century must have low self-esteem or mental illness?

Women have fought for decades to escape the very relationship encouraged by this book.

Wednesday

iGeneration

Hubby and myself aren't part of the iGeneration. We don't own smart phones. We don't even have a phone contract. No iPad. No iCar.

The self-gratifying iGeneration are strangely satiated with plastic toys and empty lives. How come? TV? The web?

Monday

Sci-fi in 2012

Sci-fi isn't doing so well in our era.

New sci-fi TV shows struggle for an audience and sci-fi movies are re-hashing old films (Total Recall? Judge Dredd?).

In our world of iTech how come people have little interest in sci-fi?

Saturday

Stargate Universe season 2

Season 2 of Stargate Universe was significantly better than season 1. The Battlestar Galactica-style filming seemed less obvious and a nice camaraderie developed.

By the end of season 2 we were very much into the show and the final episode proved to be a tantalising cliffhanger. Pity that there's no season 3.
