Saturday

Avengers

I liked Avengers Assemble, although the name of the film just doesn't work

Friday

Men in Black 3

This was one lousy movie.

Men in Black 2 was really poor, but this was actually worse.

The jokes weren't funny and the 2 lead actors looked so old and tired-out.

We switched it off after an hour and wished we'd done so earlier.

Thursday

Woola from John Carter

John Carter was the best film we've seen all year long. Absolutely riveting.

Based on stories written by the guy who created Tarzan.

Sunday

Crazy, Stupid Love

Films about failed marriages are pretty popular but pretty depressing. I couldn't really figure the message with this film.

Ryan Gosling seems to be appearing in quite a few films of late but I really can't figure out why. His character acted like he thought he was James Bond but actually came across more like a quite effeminate metrosexual.

Thursday

Chroncile

We liked Chroncile. It started off echoing Cloverfield in terms of how the movie was presented, but Chronicle was far superior with some genuinely funny moments.

It was a very enjoyable film.

Sunday

Game of Shadows

The latest Sherlock Holmes movie was a rather shabby effort. Guy Ritchie's re-imagining of the character worked reasonably well in the first movie, but this sequel lacked any real focus. It reminded me of one of the later Clouseau movies.

Clouseau began life as a cameo in The Pink Panther and then as a fully-fledged character in A Shot in the Dark.  A Shot in the Dark featured Clouseau at his best. The gags were fresh and well-timed. Subsequent films became increasingly poor in standards and quality and truly set the benchmark for what typically happens to sequels.

Faster, bigger, funnier may appeal to many people, but how about 'different'? A sequel doesn't need to be bigger. It can be better just by being imaginative and intriguing.

Sherlock Holmes was always about mystery and problem-solving. Ritchie's Holmes is more like a spy than a detective. This is a Sherlock Holmes action movie. I prefer the gravity and acumen of Basil Rathbone.

Sleeping Beauty

We tried watching Sleeping Beauty last night. It is a new release on DVD starring Emily Browning. What a boring film. Really lame, dull and creepy.

The DVD case is emblazoned with stunning reviews. Are these for the same film?

We switched it off after a difficult hour.
