Playing by ear
Hubby learns things in the same way that music people 'play by ear'.

Peter Southwood thought that it was amazing how quickly Hubby picked up his forms and how Hubby was able to go home and return the following week with a better reproduction that what he was shown.
Not only can Hubby learn immensely quickly by ear, but he can also improve what he has learned.
I have never personally seen him do this with tai chi (he hasn't learned a new form in almost two decades) but I see him do it all the time with other things: for example 'baking'.

30 minutes of bagua palm changes
Hubby normally does 30-45 minutes of tai chi form: Yang Cheng Fu, Yang Cheng Fu (mirrored), pao chui x 3, then an equivalent amount of bagua form: 5 x anti-clockwise, 5 x clockwise - through the 8 palm changes. Then he does his weapons forms...
He does this every day.
He does this every day.

Why my Hubby can't watch martial arts movies...
Having watched Chuck for 2 seasons now, I can see quite clearly why my Hubby can't watch martial arts action scenes. They make me cringe, and I have no comprehension of Hubby's skill.
Real life self defence is nothing like what goes on in the movies and nothing like I learned in Taekwondo when I passed my black belt. The real thing is very sudden, small, decisive and scary.
There's no fighting as such in what Hubby teaches. The attacker begins to move and suddenly its over. I guess this doesn't look so great on film.
